INTERFAITH COALITION WILL HAVE COURT-DECISION FORUM - Post-Tribune (IN)

The Gary Interfaith Action Coalition will have a public forum at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at the Genesis Convention Center to discuss the recent decision by the Lake County Commissioners to keep the Lake County Juvenile Court in Gary. At a press conference supporting the commissioners' decision, the Rev. Victor Davis of the Spirit of God Fellowship said the coalition will now direct its efforts to supporting the renovation of Froebel High School into expanded Juvenile Court facilities and the construction of a new detention center.

Davis said the coalition will outline its recommendations for funding of the Juvenile Court project at the forum.

IUN HOST FOR TV TOWN MEETING

GARY - In conjunction with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Indiana University Northwest will be host for a national town hall meeting, featuring Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting, nationally broadcast via satellite, will address capital gains and tax cuts, spending cuts and welfare reform. It will include Majority Leader Dick Armeym, Majority Whip Tom DeLay, Rep. John Boehner and, subject to floor activity, Reps. John Kasich and Bill Archer.

Those attending will have the opportunity to participate by telephone in the forum. Those with questions related to the issues of the meeting are encouraged to submit them to IUN prior to the forum.

The free event is open to the public, but those planning to attend are asked to call IUN to register.

HEALTH INFORMATION SEMINAR

GARY - The New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church plans a free health information seminar and health fair, 'AIDS and the African American Church Family.'

The seminar is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, with the AIDS seminar from 10 a.m. to noon at the church, 1917 Carolina St., telephone 886-2555.

The seminar will be presented by healthcare professionals and is open to everyone. Many of the health fair booths will be conducted by Purdue University Calumet and Indiana University Northwest junior and senior nursing students.

AAUW STATE PRESIDENT TO SPEAK

GARY - American Association of University Women's Gary-Merrillvile branch is sponsoring an educational foundation luncheon at 11:15 a.m topday at Johnathan's Restaurant, 3325 45th Ave., Highland.

Guest speaker will be Jade Cooney, AAUW state president. Her topic will be ''Eleanor Roosevelt Foundation and Our Focus for 1995.' The foundation awards scholarships to qualified women for advanced study and research.

Cost of the luncheon is $15. Patricia Loveland is president of the local chapter.

STEELWORKER RETIREES TO MEET

GARY - Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees Chapter No. 31-14 will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at McBride Hall, 1301 Texas St.

A representative from Blue Cross and Blue Shield will speak. Friends also are invited to attend.

CARD AND BUNCO PARTY SUNDAY

LAKE STATION - Lake Station American Legion Auxiliary No. 100 will have a card and bunco party at 1 p.m. Sunday at the post, 1899 Central Ave. There will be door prizes, a raffle and a salad bar. Cost is $5.

IMMUNIZATION SERIES TO BEGIN

HAMMOND - The Lake County Health Department will begin a second series of immunizations for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) for all fifth-grade pupils.

There may be 11th- and 12th-grade students who missed this second series, which was mandated in 1991. Many colleges require that incoming student have the second series before enrollment.

The clinic is open from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Immunization dates are March 21, March 28 and April 11.

TWO ARRESTED AFTER DRUG RAID

EAST CHICAGO - Police arrested two people following a drug raid on an apartment early Friday night.

Officers from the narcotics, gang crimes and community policing units served a search warrant at 505 W. Chicago Ave., Apt. 1, about 6:30 p.m., said Lt. RC Henderson.

Inside, police say, they found a small amount of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, including needles and crack pipes. A 31-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of maintaining a common nuisance, and a 36-year-old man is expected to be charged with visiting a common nuisance.
