Health response clinic to be held Saturday - Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA -- Parents who want to improve the way they respond totheir children's health can get training from a national expertSaturday at the Southeast Community Center, 1211 S. Seventh St.,from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The program is designed to help parents gain knowledge, skillsand confidence in managing common childhood illnesses at home, reducing time away from work and school.

Ariella Herman, research director of the Health Care Institute atthe University of California-Los Angeles Anderson School ofManagement, will conduct the program. Her studies have shown thatmany parents are uneducated or misinformed about children's health.

'This contributes to soaring health care costs, rising Medicaidspending and overuse of emergency rooms,' Herman said in a newsrelease.

So far, about 100 parents have signed up and the session canaccommodate another 100. Everyone will receive a book, 'What To DoWhen Your Child Gets Sick' in English and Spanish. La Casa HogarYakima Interfaith Coalition will serve free lunch at the conclusionof the program, which also includes the giveaway of a big-screen TV.

Dr. Jocelyn Pedrosa, medical director at Yakima NeighborhoodHealth Services, will be on hand to answer medical questions.
